Simon the sorcerer wanted to buy the Spirit that was given through the laying on of the apostles hands. [Acts 8 – 9 to 25 ]
This is the Spirit that is free for the asking in faith. This means that Simon was involved in some kind of bargaining to gain spirituality. This rings a bell about Sapphira and her husband who sold land but kept back part of the price. [why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart?] NASB [ Acts 5 – 1 to 11 ]
The price demanded for possession of the Spirit, is turning your heart over to the Spirit, if you keep back or retain some of the old ways, you are not being honest with God, you have not fully committed to him.
This hints of wheeling and dealing in terms of trying to retain control of your life in the old ways, that certain habits or sins are not surrendered to God. For this, Simon drew a curse, and Sapphira, death.
So the heart is a place which needs to be softened [and cleansed] so it can accept the Spirit of love. Any hardness of heart will result in the Spirit being displaced from its central position in one’s life, or at the very least the Spirit will be grieved.
Jesus paid for your death – and bought your life – did he get value?
[You are not your own, you were bought with a price..] [Note – A common theme can be seen between Ananias and Sapphira and Adam and Eve in conspiracy against God]
