Eccles. 3 – 11 “…set eternity in the human heart…”
There is much in the bible about the heart. Out of the heart come evil things, out of the good heart come good things. The cleansing of the heart through faith in Christ. Cleansing is by the forgiveness that comes through faith in Jesus. This means faith in his cleansing of us when he took our sin away on the cross. “..as far as the East is from the West..”
So it is a question of ACCEPTING THE CLEANSING.
Acceptance of cleansing should be accompanied by a new Spirit of life.
It is the heart to which we should look to explain both death and life. The renewed heart, the cleansed one, should bring forth good things, the “fruit of the Spirit”. The uncleansed heart is “sinful” corrupt and “wicked”.
Natural people are therefore dysfunctional from a Godly point of view. They are “dead” in sin. They have no relationship either to or with God. The uncleansed heart is caught up in its own wants needs and desires. It is conflicted by sin and guilt.
The heart grasps things, but the mind analyses them in detachment from the heart. The heart gives emotional consent and acceptance, the mind seeks to analyse “what it can get out of it”.
That is why the heart that sorrows over sin and guilt will latch onto the gospel message of forgiveness, while the heart that is involved in self satisfaction will deny, distract and deflect the message away from simple acceptance by the heart.
The scripture which says that “do not say in your heart, “who shall go up into heaven to bring Christ down, or descend into the deep to bring Christ up..?” “But what does it say? “The word is near you, that if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth, you will be saved”. “Because with the heart man believes, and with the mouth confesses unto salvation…?” Romans 10 – 6.
We can understand the simplicity that it is good and right, not bad and wrong, that will stand for eternity. That the creative forces that have been set into motion will find their peak and fulfillment, not in anything that causes decay or is an agent of destruction, but only in that which is of the same nature as eternity itself.
If people are found to be agents of decay and destruction, they themselves will be destroyed. But if they have the drive and Spirit of the Creator then they will have the nature of creation’s destination, which is eternity, and eternal life. The fruit of peace is peace, but the fruit of strife is more strife. The cross was the end of strife so we can have peace.
[Romans 8-6 “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the spirit is life and peace”]
