Mankind is in self destruct mode because man inwardly is self condemned because he has the ability to moralise, and this results in him condemning himself for his poor moral conduct. This results in inner confliction which results in him being torn apart mentally by this conflict.
So the reality of logic results in inner separation of his state of mind and its efficiency of operation to the point where his mental state can deteriorate noticeably.
Biblically, this represents the conflict Paul expresses in Romans chapter 7 as “The good I would do I cannot, the evil I would not do is what I end up doing”. There is a will to comply with that which makes perfect moral sense, but knowledge of former failure results instead in an avoidance mechanism kicking in to avoid ending up with a similar result that continually causes condemnation.
The person ends up as a “wretched man”.
